Voting rights
Give roles a say in proposals the guild decides together.
A voting rights reward lets the members of a role take part in the decisions your guild makes together. Members vote on proposals: where to spend the treasury, which feature to build next, who joins the core team. Votes come from roles, so the people you already trust through requirements are the people who decide.
What voting rights are
Each voting rights reward carries a number of votes (its weight, from 1 to 1,000,000) and an option for whether holders can create proposals. The reward is granted with the role and taken back when the role is lost, like a permission. There is nothing for members to claim, connect or pay.
Add voting rights to a role
- In the admin panel, open Spaces & roles, select the role, and under Unlocks press Add reward.
- Pick Voting rights.
- Under Votes per member, set the weight, for example 1 for a member and 5 for a core contributor.
- Turn on Members with this role can create proposals if holders may start proposals of their own.
- Press Add voting rights.
The role card then shows the reward as, for example, "5 votes". A Votes link appears in the guild's sidebar once any role carries voting rights.
How votes add up
A member's voting power is the sum of the votes of every voting rights reward they hold. A member with the "Member" role (1 vote) and the "Core" role (5 votes) has 6 votes. If they lose the "Core" role, their power drops to 1. Admins and owners can always create proposals, but they only vote with the rights their roles give them.
Power is measured when a vote is cast or changed, and the weight is stored with that vote. Results don't move later if roles change.
Proposals
Anyone who can create proposals starts one from the Votes page with New proposal. A proposal has:
- a title and a description, written in Markdown;
- two to ten choices;
- a method: Single choice (each member picks one choice) or Approval (each member picks any number of choices, and every pick receives their full vote);
- when it opens (now, or at a time you choose) and when it closes: one to 90 days after it opens;
- an optional quorum, the minimum total votes for the result to count;
- optionally, which voting rights count. By default every voting rights reward of the guild does. Pick some to let only those roles decide;
- when results are visible.
A proposal is Upcoming until it opens, Open while members can vote, and Closed afterwards. The author or an admin can edit a proposal until it opens, and cancel it while it is upcoming or open. Cancelling keeps the votes already cast. Admins can delete upcoming or cancelled proposals.
Voting
Members with voting power open a proposal, pick their choice and press Vote. The page says how many votes theirs will carry before they press. While the proposal is open they can use Change vote to replace their vote, or Withdraw vote to take it back. Only their latest vote counts.
Members without voting rights see the proposal and its results but can't vote, and a note points them to the roles that carry voting rights.
Results
- Live: everyone sees the tally while voting is open.
- After voting closes: choices and weights stay hidden until the proposal closes. The number of voters is always shown.
Results are bars by weight, with each choice's share, votes and voters. When a proposal closes it shows the winner. If two choices tie, both win. If a quorum is set and the total votes fall short, no choice wins and the page says the quorum wasn't reached.
[!NOTE] Votes are public. Once results are visible, anyone who can see the proposal can see who voted for what, and with how many votes. There are no secret ballots.
For guild admins
Admins manage proposals from Proposals in the admin panel, next to the other modules. Proposals are listed as Open, Upcoming and Closed, newest first; the closed list loads 100 at a time, with Load more for older ones. A proposal moves from Upcoming to Open and from Open to Closed at its own time, without reloading the page.
Each proposal offers what its state allows:
- Open (or View results) takes you to the proposal page, with its results and voters.
- Edit until it opens.
- Cancel proposal while it is upcoming or open. The votes already cast are kept.
- Delete while it is upcoming or cancelled.
New proposal creates one, the same way the Votes page does.
Gotchas
- Voting rights only count while the member is in the guild. A member who leaves can't vote, and their power goes with their roles.
- Changing a role's requirements changes who holds its voting rights, and so who can vote on open proposals. Their votes already cast stay.
- Voting is for decisions inside Guild. It doesn't run anything onchain, and token balances don't weigh in directly. To weigh votes by holdings, create roles with token requirements and give each its own voting rights.
